Promethean Conference

Starting in 2011, each year the Centre for East European Studies UW and the journal, Nowy Prometeusz (New Prometheus) organize an international conference dedicated to “Prometheanism”. Besides Poland, scholars from Ukraine, Russia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, France and Germany have lectured at the conference. Participants engage in issues pertaining to the history of the Promethean Movement in Poland, as well as in countries and nationalities enslaved by the USSR.

Every year the Conference has a different title and deals with different aspects of Prometheanism: people, organisations, publications, political and geopolitical visions or the fate of Prometheanism after the IInd World War.

Every year we manage to gather a group of excellent scholars from all over the world. Our regular guests are:: prof. Giorgi Mamulia (Paris/Tbilisi), prof. Walentyna Piskun (Kiev), prof. Nasiman Yaqublu (Baku), prof. Hiroaki Kuromiya (Bloomington), prof. Wołodymyr Komar (Ivano-Francovsc), dr Bahyt Sadykova (Almaty), prof. Marek Kornat (Warsaw), prof. Jan Jacek Bruski (Kraków) and many more.

An importana element of every Conference is a special, concelebrated holy mass, in memory of the late promethean movement activists from Poland and abroad. Each year the mass is celebrated by priests representing various confessions: Roman Catholic, Greek Catholic, Armenian Catholic and Orthodox. We also always invite a Muslim spiritual leader.

Conferences take place each year in the lat week of October. The best conference papers are published in the „Nowy Prometeusz” journal.
